A wide variety of punch and notch machines are available, both in fixed and adjustable setups. The units are usually designed for incorporation into process lines.
Ease of maintenance
Punch and notch machines require minimal attention, as they are fitted with proprietary tooling that is designed for easy maintenance, offering durability in demanding applications combined with exceptional positional accuracy when used with Atkin Automation software and servo positioning.
Punch units may be configured either as die sets with integral tooling or as power frames that allow rapid interchange of die sets. This flexibility enables the punch or notch profile to be changed quickly. Punching force is typically provided by a hydraulic cylinder acting directly on the upper section of the punch. Cycle times range from 1–2 seconds for low-production machines to as little as 0.1 seconds for high-speed punching and shearing operations. The hydraulic power pack is normally located close to the cylinder to minimise losses and response time.
Punch frames can be mounted on slideways and lead screws, which may be self-centring or individually adjustable. Alternatively, the frames can be installed on a separate adjustable slide, allowing the shear and punch units to operate simultaneously, removing the need for ‘program’ feeding. This combination of adjustments significantly increases production rates.
To minimise changeover times, Atkin can incorporate precision lead screws driven by servo motors and zero-backlash gearboxes to accurately position the punches during product changeover. Punch positions may also be adjusted manually, with the system automatically storing and recalling the last punch settings. This arrangement eliminates human error during product changeovers and ensures repeatable, accurate positioning.
